»Eastern Responses in Pop & Art to Imperialism« (En)

Creams, Faina Yunusova, host: Julia Boxler

Wait, the Imperial East?! Responses to Any Imperialism in Pop & Art
Imperialism is a term usually reserved for the »capitalist West« in leftist discourses. Not least due to Russia’s war in Ukraine, tectonic movements in imperialism debates are the order of the day. Artists from former Soviet colonized countries and regions are raising their voices louder than ever and expressing their postcolonial messages in pop and art. This talk will bring together figures from the cultural scene with post-socialist heritage to explore in what way artistic identities and expressions are influenced by (post)soviet colonial heritage in their home countries and how art can fight imperial attitudes of the East and West.
Wait, the imperial East?! Why is decolonisation of the post-socialist region so important? What to do if your government is controlled by the Kremlin? How to fight two fronts: for independence in the East and agency in the West? How to deal with self-exotization in the arts? Can we overcome any of this in art?
Musician and composer Creams and artist Faina Yunusova will discuss these issues. The talk is conceived and hosted by Julia Boxler (X3 Podcast – the first German Postost podcast, ARTE Tracks East).
