Krista Papista: »Fucklore: Bellringers«
The cover of Krista Papista’s latest LP »FUCKLORE« shows the dark red water of a dam running through the landscape like a massive open wound. The Cyprus-born, Berlin-based artist mixes traditional forms and aesthetics of conventional folklore into a challenging, queer, political shit-show: »Fucklore: Bellringers« reviving a magical ritual practised by peasant women in the Cyprus and Aegean Islands who wore the bells of their lost sheep during carnivals to drive away the dark spirits of winter. Krista Papista’s feminist performance oscillates between poetics, absurdity and sexual explicitness – a reflection of personal, cultural, financial and political collapse. In the process, she uses traditional influences from the Balkans and Western Asia, transforming them into a queer folkloric punk spectacle. In her Commissioned Work, she reflects on origins and culture, combining anarchy and grieving with private and public gestures, subversively countering the nationalistic narrative of her homeland’s folk music. Krista Papista is offering three individual shows, with one performance ending up at the Çaystube. Please join the collective procession!
