mui zyu
»Two worlds,« says mui zyu, meet in her music: »A kitchen sink reality versus a more fantastical place.« Behind the guise of mui zyu is Hong Kong-based British artist Eva Liu, who navigates the tricky territory of an ever-changing identity, having sought a new self by combining her love of video games and film scores with traditional Chinese instruments. Already with her solo EP »a wonderful thing vomits«, Liu received praise for her seamless integration of sombre, often menacing instrumentation and cuddly, soft vocals. Now, on her debut album »Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century«, she combines choppy soundscapes, delicate industrial ambience and cute pop melodies with co-production by Luciano Rossi, her former bandmate in Dama Scout. A flourishing patchwork of lo-fi percussion, poignant lyrics and strangely seductive arrangements.
