Charlotte Brandi
In creating her own brand of art-pop, Charlotte Brandi pulls out all the stops, unsurpassed in the local music scene in terms of versatility and boundless curiosity. On her latest album »An den Alptraum« (»To the Nightmare«) – her first LP in German, and produced entirely without cis men – her impressive voice achieves a new freedom and richness of expression. It flutters, scrapes, plummets, recovers, shines to the heavens or lurks from a dark, deep place, like the deep sigh at the beginning of her song »Frau« (»Woman«). Her sound is timeless, never too slick or pandering to the zeitgeist. Her lyrical themes reflect many of the current debates being held, without boasting universal answers. »I want to demand us to deal with these topics,« says the former member of dream-pop duo Me And My Drummer, as she transports us into a unique sonic world in which harmony and dissonance, accusation and conciliatory cuddling are often just a few bars apart. And that may be Brandi’s greatest strength: to unite the simultaneity of all things into a distinctive, catchy song.
