Black and white photo of the band Codeine, three older, white men standing next to each other and smiling at the camera, only the man on the left shows teeth. He wears short, grey hair, a denim shirt with reading glasses peeking out of the chest pocket, he sticks his thumbs in his trouser pocket. In the centre is a man wearing glasses and a black T-shirt that says "Abortion Fever". He has one hand in his pocket. The third man has combed back neck-length hair, is wearing a T-shirt, an open denim jacket and has both hands behind his back.

Codeine

Codeine could almost be called the founders of what would later become known as slowcore with their 1990 LP »Frigid Stars«. The New York band’s gracefully languid songs, released almost half a decade before Low and Duster released their influential albums, convey a disturbingly pure embodiment of depression, with lyrics to match. The band broke up in 1995, their last release being a cover of Joy Division’s »Atmosphere«, recently heard again in the Netflix series »13 Reasons Why«. Last year, they released »Dessau«, an album of songs recorded in 1992 that had been shelved for decades. The fact that Codeine are now going on tour again (probably for the last time) makes us immensely happy, especially as one of their first concerts outside the USA since 2012 will take place at Pop-Kultur.
