cumgirl8
The name alone is provocative and funny for a New York post-punk band. Guitarist Veronika Vilim even believes that that’s what Madonna would have called herself if she were starting out today. But the Queen of Pop is not one of cumgirl8’s influences. Instead, cumgirl8 fuse the punk attitude of The Slits and the scrappy clamour of electroclash into clubby anthems of defiance and non-conformity, which – as the name suggests – are primarily about gender and sexual politics: romance, masochism and pleasure, narcissism and the balance between give and take in relationships. Above all, cumgirl8’s radical call for self-liberation is also danceable, as their live set will prove, in which kick drums, distorted bass riffs and torturous synths make the floor shake – and our feelings too.
