Nichtseattle: »Haus aus Papier«

In times of late capitalism and social media – when marketability, functionality, the attention economy and, accordingly, the idea of constant performance play an overriding role in the industry – the kind of music-making that depends on a shared group experience has long been neglected. But that’s not the case with the neighbourhood choir, which rehearses weekly amidst prefab buildings on the periphery of Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. Under the direction of locally based musician Nichtseattle, magical moments arise when amateurs come together to sing in polyphony, creating a harmony that may have been unexpected but ultimately proves powerful. A synergy formed among people of different ages, different backgrounds, and different social situations. At Pop-Kultur, the choir and her backing band will sing Nichtseattle’s own indie songs as well as other compositions, meant to be understood in a social, utopian, idealistic way – and as a very colourful, joyous counter-model to the individualism and isolation of late capitalism.
